PGA TOUR Star Steve Flesch Adds to Dermik Laboratories' Donation to the Skin Cancer Foundation, Picks Up Win at Bank of America ColonialBERWYN, PA June 3, 2004 PGA TOUR golf professional Steve Flesch added to Dermik Laboratories' donation to the Skin Cancer Foundation by making 17 birdies en route to winning the Bank of America Colonial held May 20-23 in Fort Worth, TX. His effort in Texas raised the donation amount to the Skin Cancer Foundation to benefit prevention initiatives and patient education to $4,000, a donation Dermik Laboratories is making based on Steve's performance during the month of May. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) has designated May as Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month. The program was designed to raise awareness about skin health and encourage Americans to begin a life long habit of regular skin self-examinations. Flesch was diagnosed with actinic keratosis (AK), a pre-cancerous lesion of the skin that is the result of years of exposure to the sun, in 2002 and received treatment from his dermatologist. He teamed up with Dermik Laboratories during the month of May to remind consumers about the need for proper skin protection and forming good skin health habits. "After years on the golf course, I was fortunate that my AKs were detected and treated before they led to skin cancer. My dermatologist treated me with Carac® (fluorouracil cream) Cream, 0.5% and it worked for me," said Steve Flesch, PGA Tour golfer. "Through this partnership with Dermik Laboratories, I want to encourage the local community to be proactive about their skin health and go to the dermatologist for a regular check-up. If this partnership with Dermik helps one person prevent skin cancer, it was worth all of the effort." During the month of May, Dermik Laboratories made a total donation to The Skin Cancer Foundation of $4,000 based on Steve's performance. Dermik donated $100 for every birdie, $500 for each eagle and $10,000 for every hole-in-one Steve made in competition during the month of May. Steve played in two PGA events in May, the Wachovia Championship and the Bank of America Colonial. Perry Robins, MD, President and Founder of The Skin Cancer Foundation states "golfers are at risk for actinic keratosis due to the increased exposure they receive on exposed body parts, like the face, arms and neck. I am encouraged that as a result of this awareness campaign golfers will reevaluate their sun protection habits, and begin both their own monthly self-exam as well as going to a dermatologist for an annual skin examination." The win at the Bank of America Colonial is Steve's second career victory in the PGA Tour, with his other victory coming at the 2003 HP Classic in New Orleans, LA. He outplayed fellow competitor Chad Campbell on the back nine to pocket the first prize check of $954,000, helping to propel Steve to 9th place on the PGA money list with $1,948,266 and 9th place on the Ryder Cup points list. The former PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year (1998) has finished in the top 52 on the money list each year since 2000 and currently ranks 24th in the Official World Rankings.
