LPGA TOUR Star Angela Jerman Educates Americans About Sun Exposure And Skin HealthTee Off Against AKs Campaign makes first stop on the LPGA TOUR at the Michelob Ultra Open WILLIAMSBURG, VA — May 4, 2005 — Third year LPGA TOUR golf professional Angela Jerman is teaming up with Dermik Laboratories to host the first stop on the LPGA TOUR for the Tee Off Against AKs Campaign at the 2005 Michelob Ultra Open. Tee Off Against AKs is a public awareness campaign designed to educate the golf community about actinic keratoses (AKs) — pre-cancerous skin lesions — and the need for proper skin protection. During the Michelob Ultra Open, which takes place from May 2 – May 8, 2005 at the Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg, VA, Jerman will be joined by local board-certified dermatologists, who will provide event participants and spectators with free skin cancer screenings. Spectators will also have an opportunity to have their photo taken with a special UV-camera that will show the extent of existing sun damage on their face at the Tee Off Against AKs sponsorship tent. Patrons can also pick up a free Tee Off Against AKs silicone bracelet at the tent to show their support for this campaign aimed at raising awareness about this precancerous condition. "Our profession puts us at a higher risk of sun-related conditions due to sun exposure," said Jerman, LPGA TOUR golf professional. "I am hoping we can raise awareness among the millions of American golf enthusiasts about the dangers of sun exposure and the steps they can take to minimize their risk. An additional goal of the program is to encourage the local community to be proactive about their skin health and go to see a dermatologist for a regular check-up." "Golf enthusiasts are especially at risk for actinic keratosis due to the increased sun exposure they receive on vulnerable body parts, like the face, forearms, and back of the hands," said Dr. Perry Robins, MD, President of The Skin Cancer Foundation. "Prolonged sun exposure is dangerous to the skin; therefore it is important for people to get routinely checked for skin problems." Jerman will appear at the Tee Off Against AKs sponsorship tent on Thursday, May 5, 2005, from 2-4pm to sign autographs and share her personal experience with chronic sun exposure and what she is doing to reduce her risk of sun related conditions while on tour. In addition, free skin cancer screenings will be offered on the following dates and times: Thursday, May 5, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.; Friday, May 6, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.; Saturday, May 7, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.; Sunday, May 8, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. AKs are lesions that typically occur on the face, scalp, arms, or back of hands. AKs begin under the skin's surface, then often emerge as rough or scaly areas that may feel like sandpaper to the touch. They can be tan, pink or the same color as skin. People aged 40 and over who have had chronic sun exposure or a history of repeated sunburns, and burn rather than tan in the sun, and those who spend large amounts of time in the sun without sunscreen are at higher risk for AKs.
