Dermatitis and Eczema
NeurodermatitisNeurodermatitis begins with an an itch that could be caused by dermatitis, tight clothing, or an insect bite. It continues because the patient cannot stop scratching, even after the itch is gone. For people with neurodermatitis, the scratching becomes a nervous habit, although it may be a symptom of emotional distress. Another name for neurodermatitis is lichen simplex chronicus. The lesions produced by this condition normally subside when the patient stops scratching. Often, physicians will recommend a topical corticosteroid covered with a bandage to reduce inflammation and discourage scratching. |
