Nail Fungus

Introduction to Nail Fungus

Nail fungus, or onychomycosis, is a common problem, estimated to affect up to 35 million Americans. It results in thickened, discolored nails. Anyone can become infected.

There are many factors that contribute to the risk of being infected with nail fungus. Nail fungus can affect people who:

  • have a history of athlete's foot
  • have had nail fungus before
  • have an injury to the nail bed, such as a stubbed toe or cut finger
  • frequently are around swimming pools, spas, and locker rooms
  • wear acrylic nails
  • have feet that perspire a lot
  • wear tight shoes or socks
  • have family members who have had the condition
  • have certain medical conditions such as diabetes, circulatory problems, or immune disorders such as AIDS, or an immune system that is otherwise compromised
  • get manicures or pedicures in salons/spas that don't keep nail clippers, emory boards, and other tools clean
